Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Port Elisabeth has taken delivery of a multimillion mechatronics lab. This has been made possible by the involvement of several sponsors – the German ship-building company Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems, GM South Africa and Festo. The NMMU becomes the first university in South Africa that can train Bachelors of Education in Mechatronics.

Tom Webster,  Didactic Manager South Africa, was at the opening. He said the lab would provide hands-on training using industrial components and installations – and would get students fit for areas like aerospace, automotive and chemical industries.

GM South Africa`s VP Mike Pearton said that the lab would also equip students with the philosophy and practice of lean manufacturing. Our image from the Herald shows student Sarusha Pillay with Tom Webster (l) with Thyssen-Krupp's Ulrich Scheel and GMSA's Mike Pearton.
